Why is an arch bridge strong?
Arches are a good design for bridges because they can stretch great distances without needing posts to be sunk into the ground along the arch span. Arch bridges have supports at each end.
When might you build an arch bridge?
Arch bridges are often built over steep gorges, mountain valleys, or anywhere else cars or trains need to go but where it might be difficult to sink supports. They can support great loads without disturbing much of the surrounding environment.
